Pre-reading work for "Mother's Day." Brainstorm stereotypical activities for a mother. What do they do on a daily basis? Think-pair-share about whether these activities are stereotypes or accurate in modern society. Cast play and look at the "at rise" moment, play format, and stage directions required for writing a play.

You will choose one of this week's writing assignments to complete for Tues. Nov. 13. Please type for extra credit.

Writing assignment 1: Brainstorm sterotypes vs. accurate qualities of mothers. Write a three-paragraph essay about your mother, listing three main qualities she has with examples of that quality in each paragraph.

"At Rise Description
A stage direction at the beginning of an act or a scene that describes what is on stage literally "at rise" of the curtain, or more commonly in contemporary theater, as the lights come up."
"Play Format
The format typically found in an Acting Edition, meant to save space, in which the character names are on the left and stage directions occur on the same lines as dialogue."
"Stage Directions
In a stageplay, the instructions in the text for the actors (e.g. entrances, exit, significant actions or business) and stage crew (e.g. lights fade)."

Thurs. Perform play. Use chunking to break up the text and complete chart in Sprinboards about each character's physical descriptions and personality, looking at quotations and costume, gestures, or props.

Writing assigment 2: Using the appropriate structure for drama, write a short scene of your own that would demonstrate the intereactions between Mrs. Fitzgerald (as played by Mrs. Pearson) and her family.

-Describe the "at rise" moment.
-Follow the format for writing a play, with character names followed by dialogue.
-Include stage directions and descriptions of how lines are to be said.
-Be consistent with the character of Mrs. Fitzgerald as played by Mrs. Pearson. Play is due Tues., Nov. 13.
